Strides Toward a Healthier Community - My Story

"With the tools we have and knowledge we continue to gain each day, I look forward to the day we can happily say that our communities are fully insured. Let's continue striving for a healthier community."

A patient that was referred over to me by Rudy Salas' office. He was in an automobile accident and has very limited mobility. He needed insurance because he had fractured a disk in his spine and was not able to walk around or move freely...Since he lived near my clinic, he was referred over to me. I spoke to him on the phone and was able to get a date started to have his application.

Since he wasn't able to come in person, his wife came in to do the application. He felt very comfortable with my assistance and continued to keep me update on any information he was getting from the DHS office and workers. There were times when he had simple questions about choosing a plan. He would call me so I could explain it to him because he said he felt comfortable with me and felt like I was really talking to him as a person, as opposed to the responses he was getting from the HCO office at the Main DHS office. There were days he could call because he was needing to turn in verifications to his worker and needed an explanation as to what documents were being requested.

I was able to keep notes on his case and return to his file whenever he'd call. I could easily find his application whenever I input his information in the PointCare search tool. This was very handy because I could upload his documents and had his information at hand. If we needed to send or make copies of his verification, I could print them out from the files we had uploaded.

Luckily his case was worked on within a reasonable time and now has Medi-Cal for himself, his wife and child. He continues to call whenever he has questions and says he's thankful that he was able to come across a very patient and caring individual. I'm glad we were able to get him covered and had great communication. I look forward to helping out our community and patients.
